The Simplicity of a Sunrise

I had never felt so alive!

After tossing and turning I had felt a strong urge to get up and go for a walk – it was 5:44am!

Now to all those early risers, this might seem like no biggy but to a mum of a 1 and a 4 year old; the idea of a parent emerging from a warm bed any earlier than they have to is a little perplexing. However, here I was walking beneath the stars and thinking how truly alive I felt.
I suppose one could compare it to the exhilaration I felt at the birth of my children except this time my ass didn’t feel like it was going to fall out of my body. But I digress…and really this moment was not one for distractions.

I knew I was in for a show. The sun was about to rise and I found myself perched on some steps at the beach hearing the rhythmic crashing sounds of the surf. It was just me and nature and my thoughts. It was then that I realised I could not recall ever having experienced the sun rising over the ocean. Here I was 22 days away from leaving the coast I had called home for 12 years and I had waited nearly until the very last opportunity to see one of life’s wonders. There is certainly a lesson in that – don’t wait until life forces you to start completing your bucket list – do what you want to be doing today. Experience life in all its fullness today.

As this incredible feeling of peace and gratitude washed over me, it was then that I noticed a slight break in the waves not too far from shore and I caught a glimpse of a dolphin. It occurred to me then that if being present in this moment right here didn’t make me feel a sense of abundance, I didn’t know what would.

TThe moment before the sun rose, Sharon was in awe by how the simplicity would have a profound effect

Still night, not quite day, just before the sun rose

The moment after the sun rose, Sharon was in awe by how the simplicity would have a profound effect

A sunrise unlike any other, so profound yet so simple
